Invisible Children & 1Love's Collaboration

In 2005, Invisible Children began their efforts to help end the war in Uganda. Joseph Kony’s rebel army, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), had been operating there for years, abducting children to become soldiers, murdering innocent people, and raping women, among other atrocities. Three years later, the LRA fled Uganda. This prompted IC to develop several education and rehabilitation programs to aid the tens of thousands of displaced people left in the aftermath.

When Invisible Children first started working in northern Uganda, they asked one question to the local leaders: "What is the greatest way to overcome the affects of the war?" What they heard more than anything else was: Education. Education for the abducted child soldiers, the orphans, the children who were deeply affected by the war.

Invisible Children and 1Love.org have partnered together to make education a possibility. Since peace was restored in northern Uganda, many schools have returned to their former sites and are operating normally. In the case of the Awere SS, the school has partially returned but still operates a make-shift school at its displaced site in Gulu town. The next step is the complete return of the school to it’s original site. In an effort to facilitate the school’s goal of educating 1,000 students, the school’s original population, 1Love is assisting with the construction of a classroom block.

More on the Awere Secondary School:

Founded in 1982, The Awere Secondary School in Odek, Uganda, was left partially standing in the aftermath of Joseph Kony’s rebel army and the resulting conflict in the region. As a result, the school was operated at a displaced location for 17 years. Although it is now reopened, if the total student population (estimated at 1,000) were to return, it would create serious challenges, because the current facilities cannot support a group of this size.

Awere’s original site is deep in the jungles of northern Uganda, and only a few bare structures remained before Invisible Children began construction. Some of the classrooms are constructed out of split logs and wire, providing no protection from wind, dust, and rain. Termites infest the wood, there are no sturdy walls and the dirt floors become extremely muddy in the rainy season and dusty in the dry season.

We aren’t done building! Classrooms and student/teacher housing are desperately needed to accommodate the growing number of students who are anxious to attend Awere. Your efforts will provide the necessary resources to educate them and cultivate the future leaders of Uganda.

Invisible Children

We are storytellers, visionaries, humanitarians, artists, and entrepreneurs.

We seek to end the use of child soldiers in Joseph Kony's rebel war and restore northern Uganda to peace and prosperity.

As a non-profit, Invisible Children looks to transform apathy into activism. By documenting the lives of those living in regions of Northern Uganda experiencing conflict and injustice, we aim to create a personal narrative of the current struggles.

Our media creates an opportunity for people to become part of a grassroots movement that intelligently responds to what's happening in the world. But our work extends beyond our borders.

In war-affected regions we focus on long-term development, working directly with Ugandan individuals and institutions that are eager to realize their full potential. Through education and innovative economic opportunities, we partner with affected communities and strive to improve the quality of life for individuals living in conflict and post-conflict regions.
